    There are six steps to great mental health and wellbeing – we want your ideas for each one. After Mental Health Week (6-14 October 2018) we will choose one entry in each of the six steps to win a great prize pack.

  • Six steps to mental health and wellbeing

    If you’re interested in health and happiness then you will love these six steps to positive mental health and wellbeing.

    More and more research* is showing how certain things we do can improve our moods, reduce the risk of depression, strengthen relationships, keep us healthy, and even add years to our lives. Check out the six steps below and use them for inspiration to create your meme!

    Be active - Do what you can, enjoy what you do, move your mood.

    Your body is the engine that powers your wellbeing. It’s designed to move. Physical activities like walking, waltzing or Wii-ing can positively influence the way you think, feel and function. Practicing an activity you enjoy for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, is a necessary ingredient for a long and happy life.

    Keep learning - Embrace new experiences see opportunities surprise yourself.

    Studies are showing that life-long learners are some of the healthiest, happiest people around. Our wellbeing can improve by taking up a new hobby, practicing the piano or even struggling with a game of Scrabble.

    Give - Your time, your words, your presence.

    Did you know that giving to others does amazing things like reducing your blood pressure and improving your sleep? Practicing random acts of kindness, volunteering time, or simply saying ‘thank you’ all work wonders for your wellbeing.

    Connect - Talk, listen, be there.

    Close relationships with friends and family can add up to seven years to our lives. That’s the same benefit as giving up smoking! So plan a party or get together for a chat to connect more with the people around you.

    Take notice - Remember the simple things that give you joy.

    Noticing nature helps us press the pause button. It reduces the stress of our modern ‘hurry-worry’ lives. Savouring our surroundings gives us, quite literally, more breathing space.

    Care for our planet - We all share the home.

    Keeping our blue planet in tip-top shape is the best recipe for world wellbeing. It can sometimes feel like a hopeless task, but small positive changes like getting on your bike and switching off your charger can make a big difference.
