Overview

This survey is now closed.

Thank you to everyone who had their say. The Queensland Government is considering the results of consultation and how these may support a stronger legislative framework for the child protection and family support system.

Tell us what you think about possible changes to child protection laws and go in the draw for a chance to win one of two JB Hi-Fi gift cards worth $50.

The Child Protection Act outlines the processes and requirements for the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women to help children and young people who are suspected of being harmed and whose parents cannot provide them with care and protection.

We are looking at making changes to these laws in three areas. These areas are:

• reinforcing children and young people’s rights in the law
• strengthening children and young people’s voices when decisions are made about them
• reshaping the rules and requirements for someone to be a foster or kinship carer or to provide other services to children and young people who cannot live at home.

The focus of this survey is children and young people’s rights and children and young people’s voices in decisions that affect them. Information sheets on these topics are available if you want more information:

• reinforcing children and young people’s rights
• strengthening children and young people’s voices.

Tell us what you think by completing the survey. If you register first for the eHub and then complete the survey, you will be eligible to go in the draw to win one of two JB Hi-Fi gift cards worth $50! Please read the terms and conditions for eligibility criteria for the competition.

By completing this survey, you will be part of the process for changing the Child Protection Act—your views will help us decide what changes should be made.

If you want to know more about the possible changes you can also read the discussion paper: Rethinking rights and regulation: towards a stronger framework for protecting children and supporting families.

The Queensland Government is half-way through a 10 year reform program to strengthen the child protection and family support system. The steps being taken are starting to show positive results and we want to build on these to meet the needs of Queensland families, children and young people.

A strong, modern and effective legislative framework is an important part of the reform program. We are looking at ways the laws can be changed to provide the best outcomes for children and young people who need care and protection under the laws.
